Dispatches from Highgate and beyond

Two Recent Video Snapshots

Up in Boston, we passed this memorial in the North End and I wanted to capture the gentle sound it was making as the wind swept through the dog tags.

And then in West Van on the seawall, this entire cluster of ducks (what kind are they? edited to add: are they tufted ducks?) dove under water and then started resurfacing like popcorn. I was too slow to capture the whole thing, but managed to get some footage of them.

Three Winter Scenes

Oh cozy snow village on the shelf back in Vancouver.

Snow Village

The view from the office window back in December. A bit warmer then, cold January now setting in.

View of Intrepid from work party

And this past weekend, when it was frigid outside, I looked out the window while fixing my leaking radiator (a whole other story) and suddenly spotted this. What is THAT?! Shirtless. Carrying a ghetto blaster under his arm. In -10C weather.  And I thought those Santa runners in Boston were crazy!

What is this!?

Like Anish Kapoor

Michelle had some Christmas bulbs hanging in her home over the holidays and they reminded me of the Anish Kapoor artwork I'd seen in London.

Sort of Like Anish Kapoor

Let's Check Out Some Olympics Stuff

Let's cruise up to Cypress to see the Snowboard and Freestyle Skiing venue.

Check it out below, grandstands, lighting, wow. I think this is the mogul run.

And then let's check out some souvenirs, because I'm going to want a Canada t-shirt to wear the entire week I'm back.  T-shirt, purchased. Did *not* purchase this hat.

But good thing I have those mitties!

Look at These!

My Mom, having not procured any cool torchbearer mitts from the Bay, has knit herself her own pair.  How cool are these mitties, eh?  Awesome!

Quick Trip To Bowen Island

One of my NYC friends has recently moved back to be with her family on Bowen Island, so I caught the Queen of Capilano across to Snug Cove for a quick visit with her (and the best latte of the trip!).

Here it comes, round the corner to Horseshoe Bay

Pulling into the berth.

Snug Cove in the distance.

The really cool-looking Vancouver 2010 Olympics ferry (Nanaimo-bound boat, I think?).

And the view up Howe Sound on this rainy day.

Foggy Seawall

It was densely foggy on Boxing Day and very cold as a result, but the whole town (it seemed) was out for a walk on the seawall, everyone sporting their new Olympics souvenir woolies.  Here are my folks.

Some Random Christmas Scenes

This whole "strenuous rest and relaxation" holiday deal is pretty awesome.  Here are some random scenes from the past week.

Me and Dad at Granville Island

Lots of slow-moving dog walks.

Check out the awesome Olympic gear.

Taking my own Olympic gear out for a really cold seawall walk.

The big flag at Georgia and Howe.

Vancouver's black squirrels outside my window.

The red blazer!

Nice family pic from Christmas.

This Never Gets Old

I've probably been heading up and down the Whistler Highway to go skiing for 25 years and, I have to say, this view NEVER gets old.  On the  way back from the slopes a few days ago, I kept saying "wow...!" at every turn.
